House Dad’s Literary Life Chapter 466

Chapter 466: A Single Remark Jolted Her Awake

It was late at night. The nanny van on the way back to the hotel was quiet, and everyone, having been busy all day, no longer had the energy to talk. Ding Xiang was utterly exhausted, too. She had been running around all day, and since she lacked experience with many of the tasks, they had taken a lot of mental effort. Now, she was resting with her head on Yang Huan’s shoulder, her eyes closed.

Don’t ask why it wasn’t Guo Ziyi. Guo Ziyi was sitting right next to Mo Henian, feeling terribly nervous.

Mo Fei was also holding Yang Yi’s arm, leaning against him. However, despite being exhausted, she wasn’t asleep. Instead, she tilted her face to the side and gazed at Xixi, who was sleeping soundly in Yang Yi’s arms, illuminated by the faint light of the streetlamps shining in through the car windows.

As the little girl slept, the delicate sides of her nose moved ever so slightly with each breath, like the gentle rhythm of life itself. Mo Fei could never tire of looking at her!

“Why aren’t you sleeping?” Yang Yi asked softly after some time had passed.

Mo Fei sat up, twisted her slightly sore waist and somewhat numb bottom, then took Yang Yi’s large hand and, finding a comfortable position, nestled into the crook of his arm.

She leaned close to his ear, parted her red lips, and whispered, “I’m hungry.”

If Yang Yi’s voice had been a little loud just now, someone else in the quiet van might have heard him. But Mo Fei spoke in a voice so faint it was almost inaudible. Only Yang Yi, sitting close to her, could hear her.

Feeling her fragrant breath against his ear, Yang Yi turned his head and saw what seemed to be a slightly shy look in Mo Fei’s eyes. His heart stirred. He put an arm around her soft shoulder, leaned close to her delicate ear, and whispered in a very low voice, “Then, when we get back, after Dad goes to his room to sleep, I’ll give you something to eat.”

That was far too suggestive!

Mo Fei’s face instantly turned red. She straightened up, both embarrassed and annoyed, clenched her fists, and began pounding Yang Yi’s arm.

What was wrong? Yang Yi was completely bewildered and looked at Mo Fei in confusion.

Only after she had finished hitting him did Mo Fei lean over angrily and mutter into his ear again. Although she spoke quietly, there was a distinct gritted-teeth quality to her voice. “I said I’m hungry! I mean I’m really hungry!”

Yang Yi suddenly understood. Only then did he realize that he had misunderstood her, and he broke into a wide grin.

Mo Fei pinched his waist in embarrassment and annoyance, glaring at him as if to say, “You’re still laughing? This is all your fault!”

They were already an old married couple. What was there that they couldn’t talk about?

Yang Yi leaned close to Mo Fei’s ear again and whispered, “You can’t blame me for this. Who told your dad, well, our dad, to come here and make me hold back for so long?”

Those words made Mo Fei even more embarrassed. She immediately buried her head in Yang Yi’s chest, squeezing into the same spot as Xixi.

……

Although Yang Yi had teased her quite a bit, he still felt sorry for his wife.

When they arrived at the hotel, he asked Mo Xiaojuan to escort Mo Fei back to their room. Xixi naturally went upstairs in Mo Fei’s arms as well, while Yang Yi himself went to a long-established late-night eatery outside the hotel to buy takeout of Mo Fei’s favorite dish: bamboo-pressed noodles with fresh shrimp wontons.

During their previous visit to Yangcheng, Yang Yi had learned that Mo Fei, who had once lived in Hong Kong, liked this kind of bamboo-pressed noodle. The noodles were wonderfully chewy, especially when paired with springy fresh shrimp wontons and a sweet, refreshing broth. Mo Fei could eat two bowls in one sitting!

Of course, Yang Yi only bought one portion. It was already so late, and she only needed something to fill her stomach. If she ate too much, Mo Fei, who had been exhausted for several days, might not be able to fall asleep for who knew how long.

Although Yang Yi hadn’t bothered to change his clothes before returning to the hotel, the reporters gathered at the entrance still recognized him. They were thrilled and kept pressing the shutter buttons on their cameras. Their flashes were almost enough to blind him.

Yang Yi didn’t particularly care, though. Let them take pictures. It wasn’t as if he was doing anything wrong.

After squeezing past the reporters surging toward him, Yang Yi finally returned to the hotel room. Mo Xiaojuan was still sitting with Mo Fei. Yang Yi smiled and lifted the bag in his hand, sounding rather pleased with himself as he said, “Look, I managed to get it for you! Fresh shrimp wontons with bamboo-pressed noodles!”

Mo Fei stood up happily and went over to him, saying, “You really got some? They’re still selling this kind of noodle so late at night?”

“I didn’t know at first, either. I asked the front desk and found out there’s an old shop near our hotel that stays open at night.” Yang Yi opened the bag for Mo Fei and lifted the lid of the takeout container.

“Hmm?” Mo Fei suddenly furrowed her brows. As if refusing to believe her own senses, she lowered her head and sniffed carefully. But soon, she raised her head and said with a slightly disgusted expression, “Why does it smell so fishy?”

“Fishy?” Yang Yi picked up the container and smelled it himself, then tasted a little of the broth. He looked at Mo Fei in confusion. “It doesn’t smell fishy to me. Is it different from what you used to eat? It just has a hint of the shrimp’s natural sweetness.”

“But I find it really nauseating! Just smelling it makes me feel like throwing up.” Mo Fei looked at Yang Yi pitifully.

Sitting on the sofa and watching this affectionate display between the couple, Mo Xiaojuan asked in confusion, “Sis, wasn’t this what you wanted to eat?”

“Yes, but it’s not quite the taste I was craving.” Mo Fei replied, turning back to her.

“It’s not the taste you wanted?” Yang Yi furrowed his brows. “Could it be that this shop doesn’t make it authentically?”

Mo Xiaojuan spoke thoughtfully. “Sis, I think your appetite has changed a lot lately. Sometimes you can’t eat anything, and other times you don’t want this or that. Haven’t you noticed that there are lots of foods you used to love but don’t like anymore?”

“That won’t do. You have to eat at least a little.” Yang Yi said with concern. “You’re so exhausted. If you don’t eat, you won’t get the nutrition you need!”

“Ahem, Brother-in-law, that’s not what I mean.” Mo Xiaojuan turned to look at Mo Fei, hesitating as she spoke. “Sis, don’t you think your current situation is exactly the same as it was five years ago?”

Mo Fei froze.

It was as though a single remark had suddenly jolted her awake. Mo Fei began piecing together the suspicious symptoms she had been experiencing recently, symptoms she had overlooked ever since her father’s unexpected arrival had distracted her.

This was exactly the same as five years ago!

Back then, she had also missed her period, her appetite had been poor, and she had developed an aversion to this food and that food. Moreover, she hadn’t gone to the hospital for a checkup until much later, when she had been throwing up so much that she thought she had some kind of illness!

She hadn’t expected that even after having given birth once, she could still be so careless. If Mo Xiaojuan hadn’t reminded her, she wouldn’t have realized it at all!

“And didn’t you say your period still hasn’t come this month? It’s already been several weeks…” Mo Xiaojuan continued dropping hints, even though she had only just thought of the possibility herself.

Yang Yi wasn’t so dense that he couldn’t understand all of Mo Xiaojuan’s hints. He finally caught on and asked excitedly, “Are you saying that Mo Fei… that she’s pregnant again?”

Mo Fei still couldn’t quite believe it. She turned to look at Yang Yi pitifully and asked, “But didn’t you… didn’t you always use condoms?”

Mo Xiaojuan was thoroughly embarrassed by that remark. But since Mo Fei had said it so openly right in front of her, she could only pretend to be an innocent little girl who had no idea what they were talking about.

That was true. They had used condoms every time.

But… Yang Yi suddenly remembered something and said to Mo Fei, “That day, back at my hometown! We didn’t use one that day! Didn’t you say we had to do a trial run, and that we couldn’t do it with one on?”

That was right! That night, after hearing Yang Chonggui and Dong Yue’e’s words, Mo Fei had wanted to have a son, so she hadn’t let Yang Yi play it safe… But the next day, after considering that they wouldn’t have time to prepare for a pregnancy just yet, Mo Fei and Yang Yi had started using condoms again!

Could they really have succeeded in just one night?

Wait, why did he say “again”?

Mo Fei froze for a long moment before her face turned red. Looking embarrassed, she said, “Why are you talking about these things here? Xiaojuan is right here!”

Mo Xiaojuan rolled her eyes and lamented inwardly, “You only remember I’m here now? Where was that thought earlier?”

“Now isn’t the time to get hung up on that! The important question is whether you’re actually pregnant!” Mo Xiaojuan stood up and said with a wry smile. “I’ll go buy you something else to eat. I’ll take that bowl of wonton noodles off your hands! Get some good rest tonight, and you should go to the hospital tomorrow for a checkup. Then you’ll know the result!”

A pregnancy test kit would work too, but supposedly, getting checked at the hospital was more accurate and reliable.

In fact, Mo Fei had practically reached her own conclusion. But without an actual test result, she didn’t dare to be certain. It was already too late to go anywhere now, so she could only follow Mo Xiaojuan’s suggestion and wait until tomorrow to visit the hospital.

However, Yang Yi, who had just received this delightful surprise, probably wouldn’t be getting much sleep tonight!
